Can gold be found in Cameroon?
Artisanal gold mining in Cameroon dates back to 1934 where artisans used rudimentary tools such as pickaxes, spades and pans for gold recovery. The need to maximize gold recovery as well as reduce intensive human labour led to the discovery of sluice boxes.
BATOURI, Cameroon – At Kambélé III, an artisanal mining site in the commune of Batouri, located 415 kilometers (268 miles) east of Yaoundé, Cameroon’s capital, gold miners are already hard at work on a sunny Thursday morning.
Clothed in rags and without protection, they dig, comb, and excavate the gutted site across hectares of land as far as the eye can see. Some transport large quantities of soil and stone to grinding mills, whose whirling sound creates a deafening roar. On both sides of the site, archaic wooden facilities have been set up as laboratories and are used to refine ore and extract gold from it, our company is now in charge and provides good facilities for the Miners and modern requirements.
Our company has been on the market since 2005 and has been doing very well so far. And that is why we need to expand our market presence as much as possible in order to meet up with demand and this is where you come in. If you do know anyone that might be interested in buying some or all of our stocks, please let us know right away so that we can make proper arrangements as regards payment terms, amount and time/place of delivery.
What is mined in Cameroon?
Cameroon has a huge geological potential for a number of minerals that, if well managed, could contribute to the country’s economic growth. Cameroon is endowed notably with large deposits of iron ore, gold, bauxite, diamonds, limestone and nickel. However, despite its geological wealth, mining is not yet playing a major role in Cameroon’s development, and the mining sector remains on the fringe of the economy.
As concerns mining, a number of projects are in advanced stages. These include: the Mbalam iron ore project promoted by CamIron, the Nkamouna nickel-cobalt project near Lomie, owned by Geovic, and the bauxite development project in the Adamawa at Minim-Martap and Ngaoundal, promoted by Cameroon Alumina and the Mobilong diamond mining project near the border with Central African Republic, promoted by Cameroon & Korean Mining.
Nevertheless, only two mining licenses have been issued to date: one for nickel-cobalt operation in 2003 and one for the C&K diamond project in 2011. Mining proper has not yet begun on the field. Cam iron recently signed a mining convention with the Government and the mining license shall only be issued when certain conditions have been met.
At the purely geological level, geological cartography and the overall knowledge of the country’s mineral potential is still very limited and currently seem outdated. Geophysical and geochemical data are still inadequate for vast areas or need to be reinterpreted using modern technologies and approaches when they are available. Geologists reveal that current, more than 50% of the territory remains unknown.
Cameroon is currently at an important crossroads as far as the development of the mining sector is concerned. Sound management of revenues from the extractive industries represents a great potential to fight poverty and contribute towards sustainable development. As a matter of fact, the mining industry generated direct and indirect jobs. It enables technology transfer and generates substantial revenues which could enable the government to develop major infrastructures, engine of development for other sectors.

Where is diamond found in Cameroon?
Since they were first discovered in the 1930s, the diamond placers that are dispersed intermittently along Cameroon’s eastern frontier with the Central African Republic have been the subject of numerous exploration campaigns. These small placers, mainly confined to Quaternary sediments, have never been mined on a large and commercial scale, but have instead been, and continue to be, exploited by the artisanal mining sector. From exploration in the 1980s, the Mobilong alluvial field was recognised to have economic potential based on a manually directed exploration campaign, but gravel sample volumes used for grade estimation are considered to be unrepresentatively small in this study. Recent mechanical mining and bulk trench sampling of this alluvial field, however, yielded greater gravel volumes, which allowed for a modern reassessment of the placer’s sedimentology and diamond potential. It demonstrated that this alluvial field is overall a low-volume, small-diamond and uneconomic placer, with higher diamond concentrations in localised areas. The low potential is attributed to the limited availability of diamonds from secondary detrital sources, coupled with the inefficiency of fluvial mechanisms to promote diamond concentration. With unknown kimberlite occurrences in Cameroon and the neighbouring Central African Republic, Proterozoic and Cretaceous successions are considered to be detrital hosts of diamonds; a re-evaluation of these provide insight into their diamond contribution to the Mobilong alluvial field.
